SHOW & SHARE  -  TECH TALK  -  DEMONSTRATION

October 13, 2007 Membership Meeting

SHOW & SHARE

Ken Ness

Ken told the club he and his wife Debbie, who recently retired as Bismarck City Police Chief, have opened a quilt shop, The Quilt Haus, in Bismarck.  One of their customers knowing Ken was a woodturner told him she also made bowls.  Ken showed the two very nice bowls made by their customer from quilt fabric.

Also shown is an example of the chucks Kris makes by tapping a hardwood block with 1" x 8 tpi tap.  These can then be mounted directly to the lathe spindle.  He suggested leaving flats on the chuck block to aid in removing from the lathe spindle.

Weldee Baetsch

Ron Day

Ron showed an example of an inside-out ornament.  He explained the turning procedures further during today's demonstration and provided an instructional hand out.  DSCN5469.JPG (93061 bytes)

Gary Nagel

Gary Nagel showed a combination ornament-lidded box.  He turned the globe of the ornament allowing it to be opened similar to a lidded container.  Kind of a two-for-one turning?  He also has been working on turned jewelry and brought a few examples to share.

Francis Streifel

Francis showed photos of a home-made thickness drum sander he constructed which he uses for preparing wood for segmented turning.  He has plans available for anyone interested in building their own drum sander.

Frank Soule

Frank show numerous small ornaments he has been turning with the goal of having an ornament for every year of his life.

TECH TALK

Duey Marthaller presented a brief technical presentation based on the book "Understanding Wood: A Craftsmen's Guide to Wood Technology" by R. Bruce Hoadley.  The book is available from numerous sources such as Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and The Taunton Press.  An excerpt from the book can be found at "http://www.taunton.com/promotions/excerpts/ProtectingWood.pdf".

Duey explained aspects of how a tree grows and noted how the different parts found in a log are revealed in a piece of wood.  He pointed out the different parts of the tree such as heartwood, sapwood, etc. affect wood, including density, stability, shrinkage and strength.  Duey showed a chart from the book on the specific gravity of wood which is a good indicator of the strength of the wood.  Thanks go out to Duey for a fine presentation.

DEMONSTRATION

President Pat Schweitzer headed up today's demonstration on turning ornaments, assisted by Ron Day explaining the procedures for turning inside out ornaments.  Pat demonstrated the ornaments in the Bob Rosand style.  Pat went through the procedures for turning and hollowing the globe and then demonstrated turning a very thin icicle which seems to be most difficult for most turners to master.  Pat got a few members of the group involved, inviting them them assist with specific procedures they may have found difficult.

Ron Day has been concentrating on inside-out ornament turning lately and went through procedures on preparing the wood, setting up for the inside turning, reversing and re-assembling the pieces for the outside turning.  Ron pointed out the importance of starting with four square pieces of wood and marking the pieces for re-assembly for the final turning procedures.  Ron provided an article on "Making Fancy Ornaments" by Ken Grunke with theCoulee Region Woodturners, LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

In addition to the above, various articles were referenced for different ornament styles including one on Icicle Snowmen by Nick Cook.  Numerous articles are available in publications such as the AAW magazine and on-line.

Hopefully the membership found the demonstration informative and educational.  We look forward to seeing a number of examples at future Show & Share sessions.
