DEMONSTRATION

Ron Day - Large Hollow Form -  In this months demonstration Ron follows up last months demonstration of turning a small hollow form with turning a large hollow form on his "Mustard Monster", a Powermatic 4224 Lathe.  Ron discussed the different techniques involved, primarily safety concerns about speed and supporting the turning blank with a larger chuck and a steady rest.

The turning blank has been transferred to the chuck and a large steady rest is used to support the piece during hollowing.  Ron also drills out the center to the finished depth of the vessel The hollowing begins using heavy duty tools with good support for both the tools and the turner Another view of the piece mounted in the chuck on the lathe and use of the steady rest With the hollowing complete Ron returns to finish turning details and the outside and top of the piece and proceed with sanding and finishing
